Letter to The Under Secretary of State for the Colonies

Sir,

I have the honour to forward to Hongkong an application for increase of salary.

I was appointed over seven years ago at a salary of $800 per annum, rising to $1200, with an allowance of $360 per annum for quarters. At the time of my appointment, the dollar was about 3/4, so that taking my compensation and allowance into consideration, my salary was sufficient. However, since then, the cost of living has considerably increased, whilst the dollar has depreciated about 25%.
